Sansevieria Hahnii Jade Marginata $25

$25.00

20cm Pots

Sansevieria Hahnii Jade marginata is one of the most distinctive of the Hahnii group due to the foliage displaying no markings or chevrons on the deep-jade thick semi-shiny pointed leaves, edged with a bold gold margin, overlapping to form a rosette creating tight upright cups. 'Jade marginata' will, over time form clumps averaging 30-50cm across. This is also the ideal plant for those landscaping jobs requiring low-growing hardy evergreen edges and borders. Good draining soil mix is preferred along with bright indirect light and regular watering, this is not a picky plant and is adaptable to many soil types. Hardy to brief overnight periods of frost.

Water

Snake plant is a somewhat drought-tolerant plant, which only requires moist soil in the spring and summer and dislikes the soil being too wet. In general, it needs to be watered twice a week, with a reduced frequency of watering during its winter dormancy period.

Watering plants with tap water that contains calcium or magnesium ions on a long-term basis could result in soil compaction. It is best to water these plants using either rain or snow water. Avoid the roots of the plants when watering to prevent waterlogging, which may cause the roots to rot.

Fertilizer

You can apply a low concentration compound fertilizer rich in nitrogen during the spring and autumn, once every 2-3 weeks. Nitrogen fertilizer can facilitate the growth of leaves and makes them look better. Applying a phosphate and potash fertilizer can promote flowering. Avoid the roots when you add fertilizer or they may suffer from root burnt. Stop adding fertilizer during its winter dormancy period.

Pruning

Snake plant grows relatively fast. Any yellow or dry old leaves should be promptly pruned to ensure sufficient space for new leaves to grow and keep the plant looking good.

Propagation

In spring, when the temperature begins to increase, snake plant can be divided to propagate new plants. Select a vigorously grown plant, soak and rinse its roots with water, remove all soil, and then divide the plant by cutting the roots. Each divided part should include some roots and 3-4 leaves. Put the divided plants aside for some time until the roots are drier and transplant them into fresh pots and place them in a shady spot for several days. After that, gradually increase their exposure to sunlight.

In the spring and fall, snake plant can also be propagated by cuttings. When the temperature is around 15 - 30 ℃, cut leaves that are one-year-or-older into small pieces, 8 - 12 cm long and insert them into sandy loam with 4 - 8 cm of the leaves remaining above the ground. Keep the soil moist and place them somewhere airy and well-lit. In one month, these plants should have developed adventitious roots. You can now transplant them into pots or to your garden.
