🌿 Calathea makoyana (Peacock Plant) Care Guide
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light.
Tolerates lower light but avoid direct sun, which can fade or scorch the leaves.
Water
Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy.
Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) feels dry.
Use filtered, rain, or distilled water—sensitive to tap water chemicals (especially fluoride).
Humidity
Needs high humidity (50–60%+ is ideal).
Mist daily, group with other plants, use a humidifier, or place on a pebble tray.
Temperature
Thrives in 18–26°C (65–80°F).
Avoid cold drafts and temps below 15°C (59°F).
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter—indoor plant mix with added perlite and coco coir works well.
Feeding
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.
Don’t fertilize in winter.
Repotting
Repot every 1–2 years, or when roots begin to outgrow the pot.
Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to pets and humans—safe for homes with cats and dogs.
Common Issues
Curling leaves = low humidity, underwatering, or cold temps.
Brown edges = dry air, inconsistent watering, or tap water sensitivity.
